All students entering the Zoo Animal Technology program will be tested on their ability to lift 50 pounds safely to their shoulder and carry the item for 50 feet. The test will be given on the first day of Basic Keeper Laboratory (PAZ1310L) prior to the withdraw deadline. Any student that fails to show they can complete the test will be dropped from all Zoo Animal Technology program courses and not be allowed to continue in the program at that time. If the student is still interested in pursuing the program, they will need to schedule a meeting with the program advisor and reapply for the next open cohort.
For the actual test, the student is required to properly lift a 50-pound bag of dry animal feed from the ground to their shoulder, while in a kneeling position. Next, stand up with the bag balanced on your shoulder and walk with the bag for 50 feet. Finally, carefully lower the bag back down to the ground. During the exam, the instructor will also be looking for any signs of physical challenges that would jeopardize your safety in the program.
The ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ Teaching Zoo and Zoo Animal Technology program requires all students enrolled in the program to provide the following:
- Proof of negative tuberculosis test
- It is the responsibility of the student to submit an annual Tuberculosis test prior to the expiration of the previous test
- Proof of up-to-date tetanus vaccination
2. Take a Potential Student Tour
Before deciding if this program is the right pathway to your goals, we highly recommend scheduling a potential student tour. Potential students are guided around the zoo by a student currently in the program and then can schedule a Zoom meeting with the academic advisor to further discuss the student's professional and academic goals.
We understand that not all students can come for an in-person tour. If you cannot make it to the Santa Fe Teaching Zoo for a tour, learn more about what our students do here:
3. Speak with The Zoo Animal Technology Program’s advisor.

4. Apply to ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ
Apply for admission to ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ online
Testing Scores: Make sure all documentation showing your minimum requirements are submitted to Santa Fe College. Submit any SAT, ACT and/or PERT scores taken within the last two years to the admissions office.
- Scores may be submitted via the mail, email or delivered in person to the Office of Admissions at our Northwest (main) campus or any of our Centers.
- SAT and ACT scores: Santa Fe accepts complete screen shots of the downloaded PDF score reports (includes name, date, and scores in one, single image).

College Transcripts: Any college transcripts must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar.
5. Apply to ZAT during open application cycles
Students must apply directly to the Zoo Animal Technology program through a separate application during specific time frames. The Zoo Animal Technology program does not start a new class every semester, but every other semester.
After applying to ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ and submitting all transcripts, please review the applications dates and deadlines for the program to find the current application.
6. Accept your seat
Applicants will be notified of status via their ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ Microsoft 365 email address (log in to your email here). Date of notification is typically three (3) weeks after applications close.
To accept a position in the program, selected students must reply to their decision email letter by the established deadline in the email letter. Students are required to use their Microsoft 365 email account when communicating with employees at the college.
7. Complete the pre-program Canvas Course
Once they’ve accepted their seat, students will be invited into the Zoo Animal Technology Pre-Program Canvas Course. The Canvas course is designed to prepare students to begin the program. In the course, students will find further instructions and assignments that must be completed to retain their seat. Assignments may include surveys, uniform ordering, meetings with the advisor and submission of important documentations. Full acceptance to the program is based upon successful outcome of all screenings and assignments. Failure to complete the Canvas course may result in the loss of a seat in the program.
8. Orientation
There will be a required orientation before the first day of class. The date of this orientation will be in the students’ acceptance letter and on the pre-program Canvas course. This orientation will be for students only and in person. During orientation, students will meet the Zoo Animal Technology Program’s staff, talk more about what to expect in the program, and answer any questions incoming students may have.
