Program Overview

The Health Information Technology (HIT) associate in science degree is a 71-credit hour program, offered fully online for maximum flexibility. Officially recognized as a STEM-designated program, it combines health science, information technology, and business to prepare graduates for a dynamic and growing profession. The program includes the Revenue Cycle / Medical Coder program and the Data Management Analytics program (with STA 2023 completion).

Certifications and Career Credentials

Upon completing the program, students are prepared and eligible to sit for several nationally recognized certification exams, allowing them to tailor their credentials to their career goals. Options include:

  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) 鈥 offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Completion of a CAHIIM-accredited program is required to be eligible for this exam.
  • Coding Certifications 鈥 offered by AHIMA and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), including, but not limited to:
    • Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
    • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)

The College's accreditation for the Associate Degree in Health Information Management has been reaffirmed through 2029.

Textbook, Laboratory, Reference Manual, and Field Experience Costs:

Students are responsible for the cost of their textbooks ($100 to $150 per book), virtual lab access fees ($50 to $250), reference materials (form medical coding) ($150 to $225 per manual), and certification exams ($199 to $400 depending on the exam). In addition, expenses related to the field experience鈥攕uch as a background check ($70), physical exam ($50 to $100), required immunizations ($10 to $80 each), and drug screening ($100)鈥攎ust also be covered by the student. All the costs are estimates and can depend on where the student purchases the item, funding, insurance coverage, and other factors.

Overview: Practice discipline requiring cognitive, sensory, affective, and psychomotor skills.

Performance Standards: Applicants should review standards and consult healthcare providers to assess ability to perform duties. Students must meet the same standards as required to work in a healthcare facility, including a clear background check, negative drug screen, current immunizations, and physical exam. Discuss concerns with the Academic Chair for Business Programs.
